THE COMEDY CLUB
An Afterschool program
for middle and high schools
The Comedy Club gives artistic voice to young people through developing original sketch comedy material inspired and written by them; it uses humor writing to help young people examine perceptions and viewpoints and to become critical thinkers; it shares with the larger community the comedic talents of teenagers through the production of original shows of sketch comedy performed by youth; and it makes this original comedy material accessible to other educators and youth service providers interested in employing humor to help young people find positive ways of understanding and responding to the forces shaping their lives.
The Comedy Club is based on the philosophy that the arts are a vehicle to teach young people critical values and social skills. Through both the individual accomplishment and the teamwork that this program encourages, the Comedy Club helps its young participants develop such valuable life skills as collaboration, respect for diversity, self-examination, responsibility, and accountability. Further, the Comedy Club advances educational goals in the areas of creative writing and self-expression, literacy, communication, and public speaking.
WHAT WE DO
The Comedy Club is a creative after school program that partners with host middle and high schools in Montgomery County, Maryland to develop students’ skills and abilities in the areas of creative comedy writing, live comedy performance, and the technical aspects of theater stagecraft.
Afterschool workshops in writing, acting, and stagecraft enable students to create and perform an original show, in a Saturday Night Live format, of comedy sketch material based on student-generated ideas. Through satire and parody, the students are given an effective way to examine the events that are important in their lives and to “respond” with their own authentic and personal voices.
The students draw from their own experiences to help develop sketches about popular culture, advertising, TV shows, movies, computer games, sports, cliques, testing, bullies, report cards, parents, and siblings. This comedy focus appeals to young people in a unique way and the personal relevance of the comedy material results in a high level of engagement by the students.
The program is open to students within the host schools who wish to participate regardless of ability or theater experience. The program is designed to accommodate each student’s skill level thus providing flexible programming in which youth can be challenged and succeed.
This year’s program at Northwood High School builds on the successful program that began in 1995 at Col. E. Brooke Lee Middle School in Wheaton and that has involved more than 500 students in its 13-year history.
